CONSULTANCY TO POSEKIM
Advancements in science and technology present major challenges to the modern day Posek. In many instances, he must deal with issues requiring a broad understanding of science and technology.
For example, before the Posek can rule on matters regarding the use of electrical devices on Shabbat, a good understanding of electricity, electronics and other related systems is necessary. On matters regarding kashrut, a great deal of background in chemistry and food technology is often required.
This breadth of scientific knowledge combined with the broad erudition in halachic literature and responsa is beyond the scope of many Posekim.
Today’s Posek must first derive the relevant scientific and technological background from reliable sources. Then, equipped with this background, he must search the “sea of the Talmud” for similar instances. Where no clear precedent is found, he must make a suitable analogy.
Creating The Background For A Ruling
The Institute for Science and Halacha is in constant contact with the primary Rabbinic authorities of our time and with leading scientists and engineers. The Institute coordinates the efforts of these authorities to assist the Posek in understanding all facets of the problem.
The two teams:
• work in unison, methodically analysing
various aspects of the issue at hand
• prepare the scientific-technological and
halachic literature pertinent to the issue
Many solutions arrived at in this manner have merited the blessing and approval of Gedolei Torah, technologists and engineers.
